It may start off as a feeling that something isn’t quite right. Perhaps you’ve heard something in the walls at night time. Not enough sound to make you worry, but something. A strange sound that you’ve never heard before but it doesn’t sound like possums or rodents so you put it out of your mind.
Perhaps you’ve noticed some other signs around your home, like papery thin sections of wall around your home, little mud tunnels or discarded insect wings around your home. If you happen to notice any of these things, it’s imperative you investigate further and call a professional pest control/termite company like Abolish Termite & Pest Management.
What to do if you find insect wings
The first thing you will need to do if you are finding insect wings around your home is to try and determine what type of insect it’s coming from. There are not many types of insects that drop their wings so jumping to the conclusion you have termites may not be necessary straight away, but it’s always better to err on the side of caution if you’re finding insect wings around your home. There are some species of flying ants that can drop their wings, but if you’re seeing large amounts of wings, or a swarm of winged insects, it’s very possible you have termites in your home and it’s a good idea to call a pest control company right away.
If you can collect some of the wings or better yet, the insects themselves, do a Google image search for termites and compare what you have in your home with what you find on the internet. If you’re convinced it’s termites, call us right away on (07) 3882 5351.
What to do if you have thin, papery walls or wood
If there are areas of your home that appear thin, papery or hollow when tapped, this could be a sign that termites have infiltrated their way into your home. If you see physical signs of potential damage, this is usually a sign that the termite damage could be extensive and it’s wise to call a professional pest control company immediately.
If you’ve leaned on a wall and put a hole in it, or carved off a chunk of skirting board with say, the vacuum cleaner or a mop/broom, this would warrant further investigation and it would be wise to call us on (07) 3882 5351 so we can conduct a thorough, professional investigation of your property.
What to do if you find mud tunnels
If you’re doing some renovations or replacing walls, etc and find mud tunnels (these are small round tunnels made of mud, they look a little like the nest a mud wasp makes) break open the tunnels and have a look around inside them if you can. If there are active termites in there, you have a big problem. If the tunnels are empty, they could be old or unused but keep in mind there may be other mud tunnels in different areas of your home that you can’t get to, so it’s still a good idea to call us and organise a termite inspection.
If in doubt, call a pest control company!
If you have any doubts whatsoever, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and have us come out to your property and conduct a thorough pest inspection for you. That way you can be sure about the termite situation in and around your home.
