How does pest control kill termites?

How does pest control kill termites?

Everyone knows that if you see one termite, there’s more lurking around somewhere near or in your home and if left unattended, these small, seemingly innocuous insects can do thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

If you mention the word termites, there’s usually a collective shiver down the spine of every homeowner out there, quickly followed by a small plea to the universe (or the deity of your choosing) that you don’t ever have to deal with them in your home.

In this article, we wanted to outline what happens when Abolish Termite & Pest Management arrive at your door and conduct a termite treatment. What type of chemicals do we use? How does it work? How long does it take? We run you through the gamut of things we do when we complete a termite treatment on your home. Before we run into this let’s take a look at some of the different types of termite treatments available.

What type of termite treatments are available?

Really termite treatments can be split into two different types:- Chemical barriers and physical barriers. Chemical barriers are typically injected into the soil around your home and form a barrier of chemicals that stop termites getting into or near your home. If you've got some small holes drilled into the concrete around your home, this is an indication you’ve had a chemical termite barrier done around your home at some stage in the past.

Physical termite barriers can come in a few different flavours from concrete slabs with termiticide injected into them through to plastic collars and pellets that have termiticide injected into them during the manufacturing process.

By far the most common termite treatment we conduct is a chemical treatment, so let’s look at how these actually work.

How does a termiticide chemical like Fipforce actually work?

Here at Abolish Termite & Pest Management, we use a product called Fipforce to control termites. This is a liquid product that’s injected into the ground, along the foundation and exterior perimeter of your home by our pest control experts. One of the great benefits of Fipforce is that it’s virtually odour free so you won’t come home and have a house smelling like an insect spray factory!

The way Fipforce works is it binds itself to the soil it’s injected into. It’s made in such a way that termites can’t actually detect this barrier so they will eventually make their way through and into the termiticide. This is beneficial as with other repellents that termites can detect they can find a way around it and still enter your home.

Fipforce kills termites by two methods. Termites that ingest Fipforce injected products will be killed, but also any termite that simply walks through this termiticide will carry Fipforce with them on their bodies. When they come into contact with other termites they ‘infect’ these termites also so it spreads like a virus throughout the entire colony.

How does a physical termite barrier work?

When you go on a picnic it’s likely you’re going to put down a picnic blanket before you sit to protect your meal (and your feet and legs) from ants and other bugs, right? In the same way, a physical termite barrier works similarly to a picnic blanket, but instead of a blanket, a physical termite barrier is made of plastic sheeting that’s been injected with termiticide and is usually laid down on the ground area around a home before a concrete slab is laid. This means there is a physical barrier around and under your home that termites cannot penetrate to enter your home.

Termites love moist areas around your home so if they’re going to be attracted to anywhere around your home, it’s likely going to be a wet area. There is a range of collars available that can easily fit over any plastic piping you have coming out of and going into your home. These collars are injected with Biflex termiticide so it’s a physical barrier (termites are very unlikely to eat through plastic) and given it’s been impregnated with termiticide, termites will avoid it.

There is also a range of pellets or beads that have been injected with a termiticide that is a great option for areas that are a strange shape or the plastic sheeting won’t cover.

The thing to remember is that termites are very stubborn little creatures and will continue to come back to your home if the entire nest isn’t killed. If they can find a way around, under or through a chemical or physical barrier, they will. This is why it’s incredibly important to have regular inspections on your property to ensure you don’t have termites in or around your home and if you do, something can be done about it before they cause major damage to your home.
