Pest control for oriental cockroaches
Sometimes called a ‘waterbug’, the oriental cockroach is a dark coloured (black or very dark brown) cockroach that is often found around water (hence the name) or in drains, sewers, damp locations or near decaying organic matter (like compost bins or leaf piles, etc).
Like most other species of cockroaches they will feed on pretty much anything including rotting fruit, meat, scraps, cereals, dog food, etc. Keeping your house clean and tidy is one of the easiest ways to ensure you don’t get cockroaches coming into your home.
Controlling oriental cockroaches by natural methods or DIY treatments can prove to be somewhat challenging depending on the significance of infestation. Oriental cockroaches are harder to get rid of than their Australian, American or German cousins.
What are oriental cockroaches?
Oriental cockroaches aren’t overly common in Queensland but they’re definitely around. Because we live in such a humid, wet climate (oriental cockroaches tend to like colder weather) they tend to be found more in our southern states.
Oriental cockroaches are usually around 20-25 millimetres long and are dark brown or black in colour. Something to be aware of is that even though oriental cockroaches don’t look like they have wings, they can still fly when trying to escape a predator.
Diet and habitat
Oriental cockroaches – like all other breeds of cockroaches, like to eat starchy foods and foodstuffs like meat, sugars and fatty foods.
Oriental cockroaches are found all around the world and live wherever humans have established dwellings. Females can produce up to 14 egg casings in her lifetime that will hold approximately 16 eggs each. Adults typically live for around 3-6 months.
Pest control options for oriental cockroaches
Because oriental cockroaches can be more difficult to get rid of, it’s advised that a professional pest treatment be conducted if you have these types of pests in your home. Oriental cockroaches reach sexual maturity by around 6-18 months old so whilst they may not grow in numbers quickly, they can still be difficult to remove from your home without professional assistance.
