Top four pests found in the kitchen

Top four pests found in the kitchen

With the current government restrictions in place and many people isolating at home, we’re all in the kitchen a lot more than usual. One of the great things about having kids at home is they get to try new things, like cooking in the kitchen. Also, one of the difficult things about having kids at home is they are cooking in the kitchen!

We all know kids can be messy and if there’s anything that bugs, cockroaches and insects like, it’s a messy kitchen. You may have noticed a few more bugs than usual in your kitchen due to the colder weather and a greater number of people preparing food more often. You might have even seen some bugs you’re not familiar with and thought ‘what type of bug is that?’

Well, we’re here to help you identify all the common bugs you might see in your kitchen and give you some options on how to deal with them.

Let’s take a dive into some of the more common bugs we find in and around kitchens in Brisbane.

American cockroachCockroaches in the kitchen

There’s nothing worse than cooking your favourite meal and seeing a dirty, great big cockroach crawl out from under the dishwasher or fly from a cupboard. If you see one cockroach, there’s a very good chance there’s more. There are a few different species of cockroach we get here in Brisbane. Mostly you will see the Australian, American, German, Oriental, Brown Banded and Smokey Brown Cockroaches.

What to do about cockroaches in the kitchen

The best thing you can do to keep cockroaches out of your kitchen is to make sure you’re clean and tidy. If there are no crumbs of food lying around for them to clean up, they’re less likely to want to scourge around in your kitchen.

Make sure any crumbs or food scraps are cleaned up from your floors and benchtops and wipe down surfaces after preparing food. Don’t leave food containers open and ensure your bins have lids and aren’t sitting with rubbish in them for extended periods of time.

When it’s time to call in the professionals

If you’re doing all these things and you’re still seeing cockroaches around your home it might be time to call in a professional pest control company that can conduct a pest treatment specifically designed for cockroaches.

flyFlies in the kitchen

Everyone hates flies in the kitchen. They’re a pain when you’re trying to cook and the idea of them walking all over your food when trying to prepare a meal is… well… just yuck.

There are a few different types of flies we get in and around Brisbane. There’s the standard house fly, then there are blowflies, sand flies and fruit flies. There are many other types of flies, but these three are your most common in and around the Brisbane area.

What to do about flies in the kitchen

The biggest deterrent for common house flies is to not let them in your home in the first place. This means ensuring you have screens on your windows and there aren’t any fly sized (or bigger) holes in them.

The other thing that we often find is people will throw packets of rat poison into their roofs, then the animal will die and cause a fly problem. If you think you have a rodent problem, please call a professional pest control agency like us to deal with it, then you won’t have dead animals in your roof and walls, a smelly home and flies buzzing everywhere.

When it’s time to call in a professional pest control company to deal with your fly problem

If you’re hitting flies for six every few minutes with a thong or fly swatter and you still aren’t getting rid of them it might be time to call in a pest control company as you might have a bigger issue (like the dead animal in the wall or ceiling).

If you’re only getting the odd fly here and there, you should be able to deal with it using the trusty swatter or some flypaper, but if you’re not able to remove them from your home, give us a call and we can give you some options.

antAnts in the Kitchen

Arrrgh, bloody ants! There’s nothing more frustrating than coming out in the morning and finding out the kids have left a nano-particle of cordial on the bench, only to find ants crawling all around your kitchen. Most of the time the ants you will find in your kitchen are black house ants and if you’re unlucky you might also have green ants in your backyard.

What to do about ants in the kitchen

Similar to cockroaches it’s important to make sure you take away any food source that will attract ants into your kitchen. They particularly love anything sweet, so any cordial, jelly, lollies, soft drink or anything else that has a high sugar content will be sure to attract them in their hoards.

Wiping your benches down with vinegar or putting it in a spray bottle and spraying around the areas they’re getting in (follow their trail and you should be able to find them) is always helpful. If you’re doing this and you STILL can’t get rid of them, or there’s a large number of ants and you just can’t remove all of them you may have an infestation and it’s time to call the professionals.

weevilsWeevils in the Kitchen

Weevils have been the bane of kitchen dwellers for centuries. Some complaints even go back as far as 1545 when grape growers in France suffered heavily due to these little creatures (they actually tried suing the weevils… yes you read that right, sue them, Legally… the Weevils won, but that’s a whole other story!).

Small and pernicious they come in a variety of different sizes and colours, but one thing is clear, they will ruin any dry foods you have stored in your pantry, like flour, rice, breadcrumbs and cereals.

What to do about weevils in the kitchen

If you’re starting to detect a similar thread to these solutions, that’s because they work. Again with weevils, it’s important to make sure you don’t allow them into your home in the first place. This means making sure you don’t store dry goods like rice and flour in open containers.

Make sure you have lids and they’re secured properly on your foodstuff. If you find you have weevils in any of your food, it’s best just to throw it out, clean up the shelves by vacuuming and wiping them down thoroughly with vinegar.

Remember if you have space, you can always keep your flour and rice in the freezer. This will stop pretty much anything getting into it!!
